I spent a few days this week “fun sewing.” The Bernina 750 that I ordered back in October finally arrived, so I jumped right in and made a few things to get a feel for it. Sewing is always fun for me, but stopping to take pictures for patterns or tutorials can get tedious (and so can cutting out your 14th Daytripper…) So I just decided to take a week and have some fun.
My husband followed me into JoAnn’s a while back and this landed in my cart. :) I’ve made my share of tie blankets and really, it’s faster to just sew. So that’s what I did. He even chose a decorative stitch! So the answer to “how to get your husband to fabric shop and help you sew” is clearly, make a Star Trek: The Next Generation fleece blanket while watching ST: First Contact.
My brother, of course, saw it on Instagram and loved it, and it’s his birthday today so luckily I was able to get back to JoAnn in time to grab the last one, so I could make him one as well. I also found these adorably geeky fabrics and made him some potholders.
The square ones are 9″-ish. The oval ones are “Just a Pinch Potholders” from Michelle Patterns. All fussy cutting is entirely accidental. Don’t you love when that happens?

And finally, finished just barely in time to get in the mail before the USPS rate hike, a “Bite me” pillow for my friend Erin. Yes, that’s a moustache with fangs. It’s a Sanctuary thing. Sort of. Just go with it. It’s kind of a little epic. See, this is what happens when you put the two of us in the same room with too much sugar or caffeine, or not enough sleep. This is why we must live on the same continent, and why oceans suck. Also, my new machine was meant to applique. <3
So hopefully I can get at least one more bag prototype done before I get completely fed up with the mess in here and have to organize and clean it. We have actually discussed swapping my sewing room with our bedroom. We only have two bedrooms but they are shaped completely differently and the layouts might work better if we do that. We’ll see. I would love a more fuctional layout but I am dreading having to give up a week or two to move and re-organize everything. This new machine is HUGE though, and my current setup isn’t working. I think maybe I’ll try to crank out at least a pattern and a tutorial first, then move while you all are sewing away!

Nice pillow. :)
Heehee, thanks :) Hey, you know how our minds work. Even if you don’t understand it, you witness it on Twitter often enough. :P
Oh, I understand! I do like Tesla, but you should have seen me when I was in line to meet Chris Heyerdahl… ;)
HA!! You won’t believe this, but I just sewed an apron AND two potholders out of that identical Star Wars fabric for my brother’s friend the very day you posted this! I was cracking up at the coincidence. Love the other fabrics, and the pillow is hysterical. Keep up all the good work — I love sewing from your patterns and tutorials!!!
Cool!! I have extra fabric, I have no idea what else to do with it. It may go into my “horde this forever and ever” pile. :D Does anyone actually understand the pillow? Tesla is a vampire in Sanctuary. Once upon a time he had a mustache. Mustaches are popular. Therefore, mustache with fangs.OK, sorry, fangirl ramblings. Sometimes they can’t be helped. :D
Can’t wait for the new little cross-body bag pattern. That’s just what I’ve been looking for!
Awesome! I’m working on it!
Hey,
I don’t quite get the pillow but then again, I don’t watch the show. My husband does and he liked the pillow. He wants the potholders and he does most of the cooking at our house so I guess I’ll look for some fabric.
So, I checked out the specifics on your new sewing machine. I’m totally jealous!!!!! Of course, I just got my sewing machine paid off just before Halloween. I don’t know that hubby would go for another expense right now. It’s not exactly one of those purchases that you can hide in the closet….not that I ever would!
Ha, no definitely not one you can hide. I couldn’t even get the thing home by myself :) Bernina has/had 4 years no interest financing. So monthly, it’s way less than I expected, and most definitely worth it considering how much my other machine jammed while I directed colorful four letter words at it. It’s a great machine, an activa 230, and I kept it since it uses all the same feet, but it doesn’t have an adjustable presser foot tension so when I would sew thick then thin then thick then thin it would just freak out and jam. Fine if I’m making one bag but not if I’m making a dozen! I think it would be perfectly happy to piece and quilt all day long. :) The 750 also has auto-cut and the 10″ arm, so I’m really excited about that! I refer to the 230 as the baby bernina since the arm is so tiny. I need to make a quilt this weekend, we’ll see how it goes! :D
Erin, I would say that I’m probably one of your biggest fans, but still….I’m so jealous!!! I can’t wait to see how your quilt goes.
