The Chicago Red Eye newspaper did a poll and the winning name for the blizzard was snOMG, which is entirely appropriate considering the role social media played in the storm. #snOMG trended for days on Twitter. Since we are so far west, we did not get any lake effect snow. We ended up with 18 inches. Most of it was overnight, so we woke up Wednesday to huge drifts. They called for a total travel ban because the plows were no match for the 50 mph wind gusts that blew the snow right back over the roads. Amazingly, we did not lose power, but we did end up with a broken water heater. We’re not sure what happened but the mini-explosion and burning smell when Ken tried to light it were not good signs.
Thankfully, we did not have to shovel since we live in a townhouse and our association at least covers snow plowing. The guys got their plow stuck (!) and by late afternoon they came back in their bobcat and dug us out.
Meanwhile I got a lovely cold that is slightly better today but needs to go away quickly because we are supposed to have friends visit this weekend! Vitamin C and sleep seem to be helping a lot!
In general I think everyone has had a pretty good attitude about the storm. People at the grocery stores were laughing and making the best of it. Everything seems to be getting back to normal today although we are still playing catch up (I hope we get mail today!). Now the snow just needs to MELT and hopefully spring will hurry up and get here soon!
